The hopeless case of the internet

  • I was reading about a difficult topic: shear walls in structural engineering. The website from the first search result wants to send me notifications? Why?

  • Can we talk about the pop up ads and those that scroll down with you everywhere you go? They are getting really sneaky hiding that x button. Inappropriate ads? A whole different topic.

  • Captchas? I cannot solve them. I need a bot to help me.

  • Browsing the internet in Europe? Good luck with all the websites extorting you to finally click that “accept all” button. Sometimes, clicking “no” to the “do you accept cookies” questions just leads me to the website’s landing page that has very few options to go from there. Am I not allowed to browse your website in this case?

  • What’s with the “click here to read full article” trend? I have already opened a link that leads to this article, why are you making me click now?

  • Why am I seeing ads in a language I don’t understand? Just because I live here doesn’t mean that I speak the local language. Note: Actually, I am not very upset about this.

Conclusion: all this mess makes me want to only go to a website that has a very minimal layout with the least possible number of popups and forced interactions. I really appreciate hackernews.

Next time you want to make a website, please think twice about the user.
